Harry Kane believes Tottenham Hotspur's 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League this evening shows how far Spurs have come in recent years.

Tottenham had the daunting task of taking on the European champions in their own backyard in the group stage encounter, but more than held their own at the Bernabeu.

And the visitors took the lead in the 28th minute when a run from Kane made defender Raphael Varane put a cross from Serge Aurier into the back of his own net.

But Aurier then turned villain by fouling Toni Kroos in the penalty area two minutes from half time, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to fire home the spot-kick and level the match.

Real Madrid came at Tottenham after the break, but met a Spurs goalkeeper in superb form in the shape of Hugo Lloris.

The Frenchman made superb saves to keep out Karim Benzema and Ronaldo, and late on Kane almost won it for Spurs, forcing Keylor Navas to tip his effort around the post.

Tottenham are now ahead of Real Madrid in Group H, due to goals scored, and Kane feels the game showed how far his side have come.

"It shows how far we've come in about three or four years", Kane told Viasport.

"This is the stage we want to be on. We want to test ourselves against the best – and Real Madrid are definitely the best.

"We get a point, which is more than what most teams get when they come here.

"So it shows just how far we've come and we're delighted with that.

"We go home happy and then look forward to the weekend", the striker added.

Tottenham are due to play host to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Wembley this coming weekend.
