Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon admits that he was delighted to see Dorus de Vries getting an opportunity to show his qualities against Dundee last weekend.

Gordon, Celtic’s number one, was given the weekend off by Brendan Rodgers and De Vries was handed his first appearance for the Bhoys this season in their 1-0 win over Dundee.

The Dutchman played a significant role in Celtic getting the three points as he made some good saves to preserve their narrow lead and get them over the line at the weekend.

Gordon was pleased to bits to see his understudy get an opportunity as he admits that it is difficult for any goalkeeper to come into a competitive game without playing much football.

The Celtic goalkeeper told Celtic TV when asked about De Vries’ performance: “Yes, he was brilliant.

“We have been seeing that in training over the last year and to see him come and do well, I was delighted for him.

“We work really well together, we have a good friendship on and off the pitch.

"I was really pleased for him to see him come in and show what he can do because it’s not easy spending time on the sidelines as a goalkeeper.

“It’s a difficult thing to come into a game without having played many games and to get up to speed to show all his qualities and do a great job.”

The Scotland number 1 also admits that the Dutchman’s performance was important for him personally as he is aware that he will have to keep performing at his best to keep his place between the sticks for Celtic.

Asked what De Vries’ performance does for the squad, Gordon said: “That’s what we need at Celtic.

“For him to show everybody what he is capable was great for him, but also for me to push me on and make sure that I keep my performance levels up to try and stay in the team.”
