Former Leeds United midfielder Lee Bowyer admits that the Whites faithful used to create an unreal atmosphere around the team on European nights.

Leeds have been out of the Premier League for over a decade, but the Whites were a team to reckon with in England and Europe in the early years of the new millennium.




Making the Champions League semi-finals in 2001, the Yorkshire giants were flying high and Bowyer was part of the Leeds team that played in Europe in those years.

The former midfielder admits that it is difficult not to have a relationship with the Leeds fans as they always respected the players and the team when they put in 100 per cent on the pitch.
 


And he admits that the travelling Leeds faithful in Europe were an unreal bunch of supporters and bonded closely with the team on their adventures in the continental competitions.

The former midfielder told Charlton’s official channel: “We integrated with them so they respected us and we respected them.

“We gave everything on the pitch every week and they couldn’t take that away from us, but they appreciated it.

“When we played in Europe, after a game they'd get held behind, after we changed, we’d come out and sing songs with them.

“[The European nights] were unreal, but the fans were unreal too and I have to say there were unbelievable.

“On the European nights the atmosphere was unreal.”

Bowyer made 241 appearances for Leeds between 1996 and 2003.
