Ray Houghton has expressed his delight after finally seeing Liverpool convert the chances they created in their 7-0 thrashing of Maribor in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the Reds legend feeling his former team could have won by a larger margin.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, who headed into the game in Slovenia on the back of a poor run of form which saw them win just one of their previous eight matches in all competitions, have been guilty of squandering numerous goalscoring chances this season.

However, Liverpool were ruthless in front of goal against Maribor; while Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold netted goals apiece.

And Houghton, who explained that Liverpool winning by a big margin was likely to happen as they have been creating several goalscoring chances in every game, feels the Merseyside giants could have scored more against Maribor.

“The fans and everyone were saying before the game that someone is going to be on the end of a big result against Liverpool”, he said on LFC TV.

“It has been coming, we’ve been creating chances in every game, regardless of who we have played against, but we didn’t take them.

“Tonight, the ratio of chances created to goals scored was very good.

“The difference between previous games and tonight is that we put the ball at the back of the net.

“That’s what it’s all about, that’s what gives you confidence, that’s what gives you belief and then you start enjoying the game.

“In the previous matches you could see Liverpool players were a bit edgy in front of goal, [thinking] should I take the shot or should I not, hitting wide of the target and a little bit anxious.

“Whereas tonight, since the first goal went in, they just relaxed.

“Everything came their way, lovely one-touch football, movement off the ball, good runners, getting into areas where we could affect the game and scoring goals.

“In the end it could have been any number Liverpool wanted to, to be honest.”

Liverpool will next face Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League contest at Wembley on Sunday.
