Tom Boyd is of the opinion that some of the Celtic players were overawed by the occasion when playing against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The Scottish giants were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League Group B encounter.

Thomas Muller and Josua Kimmich scored in the first half, with Mats Hummels further extending the hosts’ lead after the break.

Craig Gordon’s heroics between the sticks prevented Bayern Munich from adding to the scoreline and Boyd feels the result showed where Celtic currently stand.

The Hoops legend went on to add that some Bhoys stars were intimidated by turning out against the German champions, who he admitted are at a much higher level than his former team.

“I think it was a lesson against some world class players”, Boyd told Celtic TV, when asked about the Bayern Munich game.

“[It was a game against] a team which is right up there and had a £45m player sitting on the bench.

“It showed us where we are.

“We don’t play against such teams every week and you could see that some of the players were maybe slightly overawed.

“But in terms of the quality we played, we aspire to get there.

“Some of our players are not quite at that level, some of them won’t attain that kind of level and the others at the moment are not quite there.

“There’s work to be done and Brendan [Rodgers] knows that.

“But overall it wasn’t the worst result, it could have been worse in terms of some of the saves Craig Gordon made.”

Celtic, who are yet to lose a domestic game in the present campaign, are next up against Hibernian in a Scottish League Cup semi-final meeting on Saturday.
