Former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland feels Tottenham Hotspur’s title push could be hampered by playing their home matches at Wembley this season, ahead of the Reds visit to the ground on Sunday.

Spurs, who will next welcome Liverpool to Wembley on Sunday, will play all their home matches in all competitions at the iconic stadium in the present campaign; Tottenham are currently building their new stadium adjacent to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham have thus far played four league games at Wembley this season, winning just once and drawing twice.

The north London outfit played their European home matches at Wembley last season and struggled at the ground.

And Kirkland, who thinks playing at Wembley could be a major factor behind Tottenham missing out on the Premier League trophy this season, is of the opinion that opponents raise their game whenever they come to play at England’s national stadium, which makes it tough for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

“It has been documented how tough it has been for them”, he said on LFC TV, when asked about Tottenham’s struggles at Wembley.

“I think it’s because when teams go there, a lot of players want to play at Wembley, they raise their game and make it tough for Spurs."

When asked if playing at Wembley will hinder Spurs’ title chances this season, Kirkland said: “Well it looks like it’s going to do it at the minute.

“We saw that last season as well and obviously they are going to move into another stadium even though it’s on the old site.

“So it’s going to be interesting to see how they deal with it, but it’s definitely a factor.”

Tottenham currently find themselves third in the Premier League table with 17 points from eight games, five behind leaders Manchester City.
