Liverpool defender Joel Matip believes that the Reds were responsible for losing 4-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, rather than Spurs simply being too good for the visitors.

It took just four minutes for Harry Kane to hand Tottenham the lead at Wembley, an advantage which became 2-0 in the 12th minute when Heung-Min Son struck.

Liverpool did reduce the deficit to one goal after Mohamed Salah got on the scoresheet in the 24th minute, but a Dele Alli goal deep into first half stoppage time was a sucker punch for the visitors.

Kane then ensured there would be no comeback from Liverpool by making it 4-1 in the 56th minute as Spurs eased to all three Premier League points.

And Matip believes that rather than Spurs blowing Liverpool away, the Reds were the masters of their own downfall.

"We gave them the opportunities, it was not like they played the perfect balls, we gave them the opportunities – we have to stop the mistakes", Matip told Sky Sports after the match.

"Most teams at home with the stand in their back are always stronger.

"I am a defender and I should take care of this.

"We don't think about the title race at the moment, we only try to get back in a good mood for next week", the former Schalke man added.

Liverpool sit a lowly eighth in the Premier League standings, one point below Newcastle United and two behind Watford, after nine games played.
