Pedro Caixinha admits that his Rangers side turned in a poor performance in their 2-0 Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Motherwell and has bemoaned the Gers' failure to give the fans a final to look forward to.

Rangers started as favourites against Motherwell and did dominate the opening 45 minutes at Hampden, but not taking their opportunities came back to haunt the Gers.

In a fiesty game which saw Ryan Bowman avoid a red card for elbowing Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso, two goals from Motherwell's Louis Moult proved the difference.

Caixinha was sent to the stands after clashing with Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson, as he grew frustrated with refereeing decisions going against his side and boiled over when Bowman escaped.

Caixinha thinks Rangers let Motherwell make the game the way they wanted it to be, while he bemoaned his side's failure to hand the fans a final appearance against Celtic.

"We didn't manage to cope with the expectation. We let the opponent play the way they wanted", Caixinha told BT Sport.

"We got a little better in the second half, we had a couple of chances to score, but after the second goal, we just disappeared as a team.

"Overall, it was a poor performance from us.

"We were here to deliver to our fan-base the present of a place in the final and we haven't.

"I am responsible for that."

Further pressure will now be put onto Caixinha, who has still not been able to end the use of the statistic that Rangers have not won three games in a row under him being hurled in his direction.

Rangers will bid to bounce back from Sunday's disappointment when they take on Steve Clarke's Kilmarnock on Wednesday night at Ibrox.
