Dietmar Hamann, who won the Champions League with Liverpool, feels the fans have been fooled by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp this season.

The Merseyside giants, who were needed to reinforce their central defensive options in the summer, were heavily linked with a move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.

It turned out to be the saga of the summer transfer window, with Liverpool having to publicly apologise for illegally approaching the player.

Although a late move for the Dutchman to Anfield was always reported to be on the cards, the centre-back stayed put at Southampton.

The Reds did not bring in any other centre-halfs, with Klopp time and again insisting that there were no better defenders in the market who could have improved his team.

Liverpool, who instead brought in midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in the summer, but have had him warming the bench so far, have struggled defensively this season; the Anfield outfit have thus far conceded 16 goals in nine Premier League games, the fifth highest in the division.

And Hamann, whose former team were brushed aside 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, thinks Klopp has fooled the Liverpool supporters by saying that there were no better defenders available.

“Not good enough”, he replied to a comment on Twitter, when asked what did he make of Liverpool’s performance against Spurs.

“Fans have been fooled by that nonsense that there's no better defenders out there, then you buy Ox for £40m.”

Liverpool, who are currently ninth in the league, will next face Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
