Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson admits that he is surprised that Daniel Sturridge is still at Anfield following the summer transfer window.

Liverpool slumped to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday and it was another display of shambolic defending from the Reds defenders, who have conceded 15 league goals away from home this season already.

Despite the shambolic nature of their defending, Liverpool have also failed to convert chances at the other end and many feel the squad are feeling the pain of not having a clinical striker.

And Thompson feels Jurgen Klopp would have been in the market for a striker had Sturridge left the club, while he has conceded that the England international’s decision to stay at the club is surprising.

The former Red took to Twitter and wrote: “We would have got a striker if anyone would have taken Sturridge off us I'm certain.

“[I am] surprised he is still there!”

Thomason also feels that Liverpool cannot hope to outplay the top teams every time and stressed the importance of having a plan for each game.

“It's arrogant to think we can just beat all the top teams playing our football.

“Better game to game management required for success in my opinion.”
