Manchester United legend Denis Irwin has indicated that the strength of Jose Mourinho’s squad will come to the fore in the coming months as more key players return from injuries.

Mourinho and his players went into the international break on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Chelsea that left them eight points behind league leaders Manchester City, who have been in imperious form this season.

The Manchester United manager is hopeful that during the tough Christmas period, when the games come thick and fast, the strength and depth of his squad will make the difference in the title race.

And with players such as Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Michael Carrick expected to return from injuries over the next few weeks, Irwin also feels the big squad that Manchester United possess will come in handy.

“The positives are that we have a two-week break”, Irwin said on MUTV.

“We could get Pogba, Ibra, Rojo, Carrick and Fellaini as well, back to fitness or certainly close to fitness and we can go again.

“As the Premier League is and the way English football is, there are a lot of games coming up and we need a squad as big as we possibly can.”

Marouane Fellaini returned from injury against Chelsea on Sunday and came close to scoring the equaliser for Manchester United.
