Newcastle United could reignite their interest in Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla during the January transfer window.

Rafael Benitez wanted to sign the Spaniard last summer and while Real Madrid and Casilla were against the move, the situation has significantly changed in the last few months.

The 31-year-old is second choice at Real Madrid behind Keylor Navas, but the Costa Ricans’s injury problems mean that the Spaniard has played more often than expected this season.

Casilla could further drop down the pecking order in the second half of the season as Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to activate the release clause in Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s contract.

The 31-year-old is expected to become third choice at the Bernabeu and according to Spanish sports daily Marca, he is prepared to consider offers in January.

Newcastle are still interested in Casilla and it has been claimed that they could look to reactivate the trail leading to the Spaniard’s signature in the January transfer window.

Benitez is not happy with his goalkeeping options at St. James’ Park and is believed to be keen to get in an experienced custodian in the coming months.

Casilla has a contract until 2020 with the European champions.
