Manchester United legend Lou Macari has indicated that Jose Mourinho’s squad cannot use Paul Pogba’s absence as a reason for the side's poor performances.

The Frenchman was shown a straight red card in Manchester United’s win over Arsenal earlier this month and received a three-match ban for dangerous play.

Manchester United missed Pogba’s presence in the middle of the park in their defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and despite their 1-0 win over Bournemouth, the midfielder’s absence was felt at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

However, Macari believes a club of Manchester United’s size cannot depend on one player so heavily for their performances and feels the other players in the squad need to stand up and be counted in Pogba’s absence.

The Manchester United legend said on MUTV’s Matchday Review programme: “We shouldn’t have to rely on Paul Pogba, we are Manchester United.

“He is always going to be missed, but there are enough good players there and they have got to rise to the occasion now.”

Pogba will serve the last of this three-match suspension for Manchester United’s trip to West Brom on Sunday.

He will be available for Manchester United’s EFL Cup quarter-final against Bristol City next Wednesday.
