Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan wants attacking midfielder Samu Saiz to simplify his game as he believes the Spaniard has been taking too many touches in recent matches.

Saiz is considered by a number of Leeds fans to have been the best piece or business done by the club in the summer transfer window earlier this year.

Leeds beat off several La Liga clubs to land him from Segunda Division outfit Huesca and Saiz has hit the ground running in the Championship, often being the difference-maker for the Whites.

While Leeds have won their last two games against QPR and Norwich City, respectively, Whelan thinks Saiz is overcomplicating things and as such his team-mates are becoming frustrated.

"He needs to simplify his game. You don't need so many touches, you do your nice turn, release the ball, carry on the run forward or find another space to get on the ball and make something else happen", Whelan explained on BBC Radio Leeds.

"The more touches he has, it allows defenders to get back behind the ball or get a tackle in on him.

"It seemed like he was trying that little bit too much.

"The Saiz we love is the one who does that quick turn, quick pass and it hurts teams.

"At the moment, especially the last two games, it seems that he wants that extra touch and that extra touch, and another touch, then that pass has gone and then people are getting a tackle in and it's breaking down.

"It's frustrating other players because they are making good runs", he added.

Following Saturday's 1-0 win over Norwich City, Leeds are now just one point off the playoff spots in the Championship.

Leeds have a further three matches remaining in 2017, with Hull City making the trip to Elland Road next weekend, while on Boxing Day they take on Burton Albion in an away fixture, followed by another trip on the road on 30th December, to Birmingham City.
