Former Scottish top flight star Tam McManus is assuming that Celtic will sign another centre-back after they complete the capture of Marvin Compper.

The Hoops, who are closing in on the signing of RB Leipzig defender Compper, saw their unbeaten domestic run come to an end after losing 4-0 to Hearts on Sunday.

The central defensive pairing of Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata struggled at Tynecastle as Hearts scored twice in each half to script a memorable victory.

And McManus, who feels the central defensive positions are the weakest in the Celtic team, expects the Scottish champions to rope in another centre-back after Compper.

“Not a scout mate, plus I don’t know who’s out there and available”, he wrote on Twitter, when asked who he thinks Celtic should look to sign as a centre-back.

“I would think that the scouting network at Celtic have a list of different options in place.

“Looks like one coming in next month and I would assume another one to follow.

“[The central defensive position is the] weakest part of the team and needs [to be] reinforced.”

McManus went on to add that while he does not know how much in the way of funds Celtic have at their disposal to sign a centre-back, he thinks the Bhoys scouts need to be working to find the next Virgil van Dijk.

“Not a clue, don’t know what’s in the transfer kitty mate”, he continued, when asked how much Celtic could spend on a centre-back.

“If [Celtic] sell [Moussa] Dembele or any other [player] in January or next summer, [then the club] might have more [funds].

“Boys like Van Dijk are out there, you just need to find them.

“That’s why top scouts are worth their weight in gold.”

Celtic, who will next face Partick Thistle on Wednesday, are currently two points clear at the top of the league table with a game in hand.
