Celtic new signing Marvin Compper has revealed that he was very surprised when he learnt about the Bhoys’ interest in him as he and his agents were not looking at the British market.

The Scottish giants announced the signing of Compper from RB Leipzig on a two-and-a-half-year deal on Wednesday, with the centre-back due to officially join Celtic once the transfer window reopens on 1st January.

The 32-year-old managed to clock up just 108 minutes over three appearances in all competitions in the present campaign for the German outfit.

And Compper, who admitted that he wanted to leave RB Leipzig in search of more playing time, explained that he was surprised to hear about Celtic’s interest in him.

“I was very surprised because we were not really looking at the British market or the Scottish market”, he told Celtic TV, when asked how he felt after hearing about the Bhoys’ interest in him for the first time.

“For the first half of the season, I wasn’t playing that much at Leipzig.

“Obviously when you are not playing for your club, you are on the market.

“Celtic’s recruiting staff were looking for an experienced central defender who could play in Celtic’s style.

“They found me and contacted my agent and it took just two to three weeks to wrap everything up and I’m very glad to be here.”

Compper, who joined RB Leipzig from Fiorentina in the summer of 2014, also counts Borussia Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim amongst his former employers.
