Bordeaux president Stephane Martin has revealed the financial difficulties the Ligue 1 club are facing in their pursuit of Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

A peripheral figure in the Newcastle squad, Mitrovic has made it clear that he wants to leave the Magpies in this month’s transfer window for regular first team football.

And Ligue 1 club Bordeaux have emerged as a possible destination for the Serbian, who has made just six league appearances from the bench in the league and has not been part of a Premier League matchday squad since December.

Martin, the Bordeaux supremo, admits that Mitrovic is a player the club are interested in signing, but stressed that other options are also being assessed at the moment.

The Ligue 1 club’s president conceded that signing the Serbian from Newcastle will be a financially difficult operation for Bordeaux to pull off this month.

Martin told French sports daily L’Equipe: “These tracks are very real, but we are working on other players.

“As for Mitrovic, the fact that he is playing in England doesn’t make things easy for us from the financial point of view.”

Mitrovic joined Newcastle from Anderlecht in 2017 and has scored 17 goals in 72 appearances for the club.
