Eddie Gray is of the opinion that Samu Saiz’s suspension is a harsh lesson for Leeds United boss Thomas Christiansen and his coaching staff as well.

Saiz, who has been one of Leeds’ standout performers in the present campaign, was sent off in injury time during the Whites’ 2-1 loss at Rodney Parade for spitting at a Newport County player.

The Football Association banned the Spaniard for six games and despite having the chance to appeal, Saiz accepted that he did spit as he apologised and vowed to never repeat the mistake again.

The forward, who joined Leeds from SD Huesca last summer, has so far made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Championship outfit, scoring nine times and providing five assists.

And Gray feels it is a harsh lesson to learn for Saiz, with the Leeds legend insisting that Christiansen will bear the brunt of it too as the 26-year-old was a focal point in his side.

“I hope he learns from it”, Gray said on LUTV, when asked about Saiz’s suspension.

“He has let himself down, he has let his team-mates down and also the club and the supporters.

“You shouldn’t get sent off for something like that.

“It was avoidable and it’s unfortunate that it happened.

“The player himself has said that he has learnt a lesson and it won’t happen again, but it’s a harsh lesson to learn.

“It’s also a harsh lesson for Thomas to take and his coaching staff.

“You are not building a team around him, but he’s a big focal point in the side.

“It’s disappointing to lose him for six games.”

Leeds, who are currently sixth in the Championship table, are next up against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
