Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has conceded that he doesn’t understand why Arsene Wenger is agreeing to sell Alexis Sanchez to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

Manchester City pulled out of the race for Sanchez last night, which made Manchester United the favourites to sign the winger from Arsenal despite late interest from Chelsea.

It is believed contractual terms between the Red Devils and the winger have been agreed and Manchester United are now just waiting for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the other piece of the transfer saga, to agree a contract with Arsenal.

Hargreaves conceded that Mkhitaryan has struggled to flourish under Mourinho and believes a move to Arsenal would be good for the Armenian, but feels in the potential swap deal, Manchester United are still the winners as they are getting the Gunners’ best player.

The former Red Devil admits that he would not have sold Sanchez to Manchester United if he was Wenger, even if it meant watching him leave Arsenal on a free transfer in the summer.

Speaking about the potential swap, Hargreaves said on Premier League TV: “Alexis Sanchez is a better player than Mkhitaryan, no wonder we wouldn’t mind swapping.

“There is only one winner and that’s Jose Mourinho.

"Mkhitaryan is a wonderful player, if he played at Tottenham, Liverpool or Manchester City, they would love him.

“At Shakhtar Donetsk he was wonderful, at Dortmund he was outrageously good but all of a sudden he is not getting the love that [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Mohamed] Salah didn’t get.

"He’s not the first player to not flourish under Jose Mourinho.

“He’ll suit Arsenal, but Manchester United are getting the better deal, that’s why he doesn’t minding sending him to Arsene Wenger.”

He added: “I can’t believe Arsene Wenger selling Sanchez to Manchester United, I wouldn’t, not in a million years.

“I’ll keep him even if he costs me £30m.”
