Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has confirmed that Liverpool and Manchester United midfield target Leon Goretzka has undergone a medical with Bayern Munich.

Goretzka’s current contract with Schalke expires in the summer and the midfielder has snubbed a club record offer of a new deal from the Gelsenkirchen outfit.

Despite interest from heavyweight clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, he had been widely tipped to join Bayern Munich in the summer on a free transfer.

And it had been claimed that he would be undergoing a preliminary medical with the German champions before his move to the club at the end of the season.

Heidel revealed that Goretzka has told the club that he wants to join Bayern Munich and underwent a medical with the German champions on Thursday.

The Schalke sporting director said in a press conference: “Leon Goretzka has informed us that he might leave the club to join Bayern Munich.

“Goretzka was yesterday in Munich to undergo a medical.

"I was just on the phone with [the Bayern Munich CEO] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and informed him that we will be announcing it now.

“Leon told us on Monday that he wants to leave, but nothing was finalised then.”

The midfielder’s performances for Schalke will be monitored closely for the rest of the season ahead of looming move to Bayern Munich in the summer.
