Netherlands legend Marco van Basten has not ruled out FC Basel causing an upset against Manchester City in the Champions League last 16, especially as they did beat Manchester United in the group stage.

Basel will host Manchester City at the St. Jakob-Park tonight in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie and are massive underdogs going into the game.

Manchester City have been in red hot form both in England and Europe and are being considered one of the favourites to win the competition, despite never making it to the final ever in their history.

However, Van Basten believes an upset can never be counted out in football despite the overwhelming odds against Basel beating Manchester City over the two legs of the tie.

The Dutch legend did point towards Basel’s win over Manchester United in the group stage earlier this season and stressed that they can pull off such a result against Pep Guardiola’s men too.

Van Basten told Swiss daily Blick: “Everything is possible in football, even if things are very difficult for Basel.

“But if you can beat one team from Manchester United, you can also beat the other.”

English teams have struggled at St. Jakob-Park in recent years and Basel will be hoping to make it as tough as possible for Manchester City in the first leg.
