Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has indicated Antonio Conte is paying for the club's transfer policy and believes he needed more players to keep the team playing at a higher level.

Chelsea are in real danger of losing out on a top four place after back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City and there are suggestions Conte will leave the club in the summer.

The Italian has not been happy with the way Chelsea have conducted themselves on the transfer front and did want more quality added to his squad last summer.

Desailly has asked the Chelsea board to not get trigger happy at the end of the season and believes in the current Premier League scenario, a top club such as Chelsea could go through one poor season.

He pointed towards the lack of help Conte received on the transfer front as he was not given the players he needed to strengthen key areas of the squad in order to continue from last season’s title triumph.

“It’s very tough when you see how much City have spent”, Desailly said on beIN Sport when asked whether Conte will leave Chelsea in the summer.

“The involvement of Tottenham and Liverpool [in the top four race], you have to give room for a season where they are a bit down and work hard on the new philosophy.

“I think he should have been given replacements or extra players for the system.

“Like [Victor] Moses, is he capable of doing two seasons in a row at that highest level?

"We needed a player in that position the same as him or even better than him. [The] same for [Marcos] Alonso on the other side. These are small details and [the] same for the striker.

“I am not sure whether the philosophy of Conte is not working anymore. It’s the consistency [or lack of it] of the squad they have.”

Chelsea will look to get back to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
