Former Liverpool star David Thompson has conceded that the Reds have ridden their luck to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

There were doubts about Mohamed Salah’s opening goal at Anfield last week against Manchester City and there were suggestions that it could have been offside.

However, Pep Guardiola lost his temper after Leroy Sane’s goal on the stroke of half time on Tuesday night was ruled out wrongly for offside and the Manchester City manager had to watch the second half from the stands as the referee was not happy with his complaints.

Manchester City would have been going into the break 2-0 up had Sane’s goal stood and riding high as Liverpool struggles to cope with their intensity in the first half.

However, Salah and Roberto Firmino scored in the second half to send Liverpool into the last four of the Champions League and Thompson admits the Reds needed luck to be on their side to make it to the latter stages of the competition.
