Ex-Leeds United star Noel Whelan believes that the current Aston Villa side are average, after he watched them in action against the Whites at Villa Park on Friday night.

Steve Bruce's men are battling to keep alive hopes of automatic promotion, but guaranteed at least a playoff spot in the Championship by beating Leeds 1-0.

However, Whelan was not blown away with what he saw from Steve Bruce's men and believes that they are average.

He also noted the advancing years of many Aston Villa stars.

Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds: "This is an average Villa side.

"These are a kind of ageing Villa side.

"Look at [Mile] Jedinak at the back, even [Robert] Snodgrass.

"Their best player for me was [Glenn] Whelan and he's what, 33, 34."

Aston Villa have three games remaining in the regular season, with a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday, followed by a visit from Derby County and a trip to Millwall.

Leeds meanwhile, whose top six hopes have gone up in smoke, sit in 14th spot and have remaining games this season against Barnsley (home), Norwich City (away) and QPR (home).
