Andy Carroll admits he has not given up hope of winning a spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad, but is focusing on playing and scoring for West Ham United.

Carroll came off the bench on Monday night for his first appearance for West Ham since January to fire the Hammers to a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at the London Stadium.

The striker volleyed a cross from Aaron Cresswell to score a superb goal and put West Ham seven points clear of the drop zone.

England boss Southgate, who is plotting what squad to take to Russia for the World Cup in the summer, was watching on from the stands and Carroll admits that a Three Lions recall would go down a treat.

But the striker knows he must first focus on doing the business for West Ham.

"[An England return] would be nice but at the minute I’m just concentrating on staying fit and getting goals and getting in the squad here", he told West Ham's official site.

"Hopefully something will happen but, if not, it is what it is."

Carroll will be hoping for another chance to press his case, and against more challenging opponents, as West Ham head to Arsenal on Sunday.
