Arsene Wenger has insisted that Arsenal at their best are good enough to get past Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final.

Arsenal fans were desperate to avoid facing Atletico Madrid before the final as the Spanish giants remain the top contenders to lift this season’s Europa League trophy.

However, the semi-final draw did bring up the nightmare scenario for the Gunners and Arsenal are going into the last four tie as firm underdogs against Atletico Madrid.

Wenger conceded that Arsenal’s season is now resting on winning the Europa League and he did acknowledge the difficulty of facing a team of Atletico Madrid’s quality in the semi-final.

However, he stressed that his Arsenal team have the quality to take on the Spanish giants and at their best, the Gunners can beat Diego Simeone’s side in the semi-final.

Asked if the success of the season rests on the Europa League, Wenger said in a press conference: “It would be better, yes.

“It is important that now we have a big opponent to beat them.

“Atletico are the favourites for the competition, but at our best, we can beat them.”

Arsenal will host Atletico Madrid in the first leg next Thursday at the Emirates before travelling to the Wanda Metropolitano a week later.
