Former Liverpool full-back John Arne Riise believes Roma have the edge over Liverpool in their Champions League semi-final as the second leg is at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma have made the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 1984, when Liverpool beat them in the final on penalties at the Stadio Olimpico.

The talk of revenge has been in the air in the capital city of Italy since Liverpool were drawn to face the Giallorossi in the last four of the Champions League earlier this month.

And Riise, who played for both clubs, believes Roma could get one over Liverpool in the semi-finals as the second leg being at the Stadio Olimpico gives them a distinct advantage.

The former Red admits Liverpool are almost impregnable at home and he is expecting an exciting tie over two legs between two very accomplished sides with different qualities.

“Roma and Liverpool are equals”, the former defender told Italian daily Leggo.

“[Eusebio] Di Francesco’s team are more experienced and solid, while [Jurgen] Klopp’s more technical and spectacular.

“If I have to say on balance, I would say Roma have the edge as they have second leg at home and with those fans they can beat anyone, but it’s almost impossible to win at Anfield.

“However, I am expecting many goals and an uncertainty until the last minute.”

Liverpool will look to score a big advantage at Anfield in the first leg when they host Roma on Tuesday night.
