Atalanta have activated the purchase option contained in Bryan Cristante's loan from Benfica, meaning they have now secured the Tottenham Hotspur linked midfielder.

Cristante linked up with Atalanta from Benfica on loan last summer and the deal contained an option to allow the Serie A side to make the switch permanent for a set fee.

Now, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Atalanta have completed a payment of €5m to Benfica, meaning Cristante is their player.

Despite Atalanta securing Cristante, it is still not clear whether his future lies at the Serie A club.

His fine performances for the side, both domestically and in Europe, have led to a number of clubs being linked with holding an interest in him, including Premier League side Tottenham.

And it has been speculated that Atalanta could look to make a quick profit by selling Cristante on in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at AC Milan before being sold to Benfica in the summer of 2014 for €4.8m.

He struggled to make his mark in Portugal though and was soon loaned back to Italy.
