Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is a strong contender to take over at Arsenal, with 50 per cent of the Gunners board favouring the Italian tactician.

Arsenal have swung into action in the search for a new manager after Arsene Wenger announced on Friday morning that he is to step down from his role, after 22 years in the job, at the end of the season.

Wenger is claimed to have told the board to appoint former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira to succeed him, something which has split the board.

According to beIN Sports, citing sources close to Wenger, half the Arsenal board favour giving Ancelotti the job.

Ancelotti would be free to take over with him having departed Bayern Munich earlier this season; he was succeeded by Jupp Heynckes.

The Italian would also represent an experienced option for Arsenal, in a bid to steer the club through what could be choppy waters after the ending of the long Wenger reign.

Other managers linked with the Arsenal job include Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, Belgium assistant coach Thierry Henry and Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.
