Former Arsenal star and Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst has paid tribute to Arsene Wenger and insisted that the Frenchman will remain an example for him.

Wenger announced on Friday morning that he will be leaving Arsenal at the end of the season, which will bring an end to his 22-year stint with the north London club.

Former players and managers have been pouring in their tributes and respect for the Frenchman and his revolutionary coaching techniques in the 1990s have been lauded.

Van Bronckhorst, who worked under Wenger during his stint at Arsenal, believes he will remain an example for young coaches like him forever as the Frenchman was ahead of his time.

The Dutchman pointed towards the coaching practices carried out by Wenger in the early years and says most have become the standard in the modern coaching world.

“He meant a lot to me”, the former Gunner told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“He was one the first coaches to practice yoga and now I recognise that a lot of things he did back then, you can see that now in the way I coach – the intensity, the running lines and passing exercises.

“Everything revolved around technology and pace at Arsenal and that is now more and more important in football, which he saw that many years ago.

“He is and will remain an example for me.”

Wenger has not specified whether he is going to retire from management and there are suggestions he could return to coaching after a break.
