Leeds United legend Eddie Gray feels young defender Paudie O'Connor would have every right to feel disappointed if he is not in Paul Heckingbottom’s starting eleven against Barnsley today.

With injuries to key defenders, the Leeds head coach has been forced to field youngsters in the Championship over the last few weeks and O'Connor has caught the eye amongst the ruins.

The young centre-back has looked calm and assured in the three appearances he has made in the Leeds starting eleven this season, earning the praise of the boss and the fans.

Leeds are hopeful of having some of the experienced men back in the squad soon, but Gray believes the youngster does not deserve to be replaced in the starting line-up against Barnsley.

The Leeds legend has been left impressed by the composure the 20-year-old Irish centre-back has shown playing in the Championship.

Gray said on LUTV when asked about the performances of the youngsters: “The centre-back has done his job.

“He has looked composed.

“I know there could be people coming back this week.

"But I think he could feel a little disappointed if he is not in the starting line-up with the way he has performed.”

O’Connor will hope to see his name in the starting eleven for the local Yorkshire derby at Elland Road today.
