Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has stressed that the most important thing for the club is to finish in the Premier League's top four, after he watched his men knocked out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage by Manchester United, suffering a 2-1 defeat.

Spurs went ahead at Wembley through Dele Alli, but were pegged back and eventually fell behind just after the hour mark when a well-hit Ander Herrera shot went underneath goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Pochettino has been criticised for presiding over a Tottenham side who always fall short on the big occasion, but the Argentine believes the Premier League, and not the FA Cup, is the most important, especially taking into account Spurs' looming stadium move.

"Tottenham is in a position that is completely different today. Maybe you can arrive to a semi-final and win or arrive in a final and win some trophies of course", he told his post match press conference.

"But the most important thing now is to finish in the top four, play again in the Champions League for the club. We are building the new stadium", Pochettino said.

"We played the whole season at Wembley which you know is very difficult to play.

"That is stress that is not only for the team, but for the fans. It was the most difficult when we started the season.

"But for me it is to keep going.

"I am disappointed, sometimes after the defeat when finished the game very frustrated but then [Pochettino clicks his fingers] quick I move on, thinking about trying to finish the season in the best way, four games ahead and we need to be sure to play Champions League.

"Sure it will be a very successful season if we are able to keep our position in the table", he added.

Tottenham sit in fourth spot in the league standings and hold a five-point lead over fifth placed Chelsea with four games left.
