Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has advised Arsenal to break completely with Arsene Wenger's playing style and admits his preferred choice for the job would be Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone.

Arsenal confimed on Friday that Wenger is to leave his post at the end of the season, ending his 22-year long reign in charge of the Gunners.

Debate is raging over who might succeed Wenger, with the Frenchman claimed to have recommended Patrick Vieira, while some on the Arsenal board are keen on Carlo Ancelotti.

Riise thinks Arsenal will need to decide on whether to appoint someone who remains true to the style of play Wenger has implemented or go in a different direction.

The former Liverpool star says he would break with the Wenger style and go for Simeone.

"I would go a totally different way, but it's a big risk", Riise said on beIN Sports.

"I think the fans want to see something different.

"I would probably go for Simeone at Atletico."

Riise also expects Rafael Benitez to be in the running, with the Arsenal board sure to consider the current Newcastle United boss.

"Benitez has the reputation and he's done well for Newcastle, so he's probably one of the ten, fifteen names that they're going to have on the paper before they make a decision.

"But my pick is Simeone", he added.
