Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson believes Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino need to start winning trophies to back up their talk of progress and warned top four finishes saw Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hammered.

Tottenham lost their eighth FA Cup semi-final in a row when they went down 2-1 at Wembley to Manchester United on Saturday evening and are set to finish the season without any silverware to show for their efforts.

Pochettino has played down the importance of the FA Cup and admitted last week that winning it would not have changed their lives, but Atkinson feels it is time Spurs won something.

The former Manchester United boss is a fan of the kind of football Pochettino’s team play, but admits at the moment Tottenham need to start winning trophies to reach the elite level.

And he also added that the Tottenham manager himself needs to add silverware to his CV in order to boost his credentials as a top level coach.

He reminded Pochettino and Tottenham that Wenger got regularly hammered for Arsenal continuously finishing in the top four and not pressing ahead despite winning multiple FA Cups in recent seasons.

Atkinson said on MUTV’s Matchday Review programme, when asked about Pochettino: “I think he’s a good manager.

"I think his team play terrific football and the way he sets them up [is good].

“But at the level now Tottenham have gone to, trophies are all important and he lost another [chance to win] one.

“Two or three consecutive top four finishes [are fine] but Wenger got hammered and did it for 20 consecutive years and he won the FA Cup three times in the last four years.

“It was a big blow to him [Pochettino] as he needs silverware to seal his credentials.”

Pochettino is yet to win a trophy in his managerial career and Tottenham have not won anything since lifting the EFL Cup in 2008.
