Leeds United target Jerry Mbakogu has shrugged off an injury and should return to action for Italian side Carpi at the weekend against Avellino, according to Italian daily Gazzetta di Modena.

Mbakogu was wanted by Leeds in the January transfer window, but the Yorkshire giants put the move on hold until the summer and have been tipped to complete the signing of the Nigerian in the summer.

But the hitman has been laid low by injury and last played for Carpi at the start of March, managing just 26 minutes against Cesena.

Carpi only have five games left in the regular season in Serie B, but Mbakogu will not miss the remainder of the campaign and the positive news for the club is that he has now shrugged off his injury.

The striker has made a total of 23 appearances across all competitions for Carpi in the current campaign, scoring eight goals.

Leeds are claimed to be locked in talks to put the finishing touches to a move to sign Mbakogu, with a fee of around the £4m mark having been mooted.

Whites fans are likely to want to see the striker significantly up his goal return if he does move to Elland Road, while he should also have five further Serie B games to further impress the Leeds faithful.
