Former Liverpool star John Arne Riise believes Roma can reach the Champions League final if they can weather the storm at Anfield tonight in the first leg.

Roma shocked the football world when they knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League quarter-finals with a miraculous 3-0 win in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, Liverpool are going into the semi-final tie as the favourites after dominating Manchester City over two legs in the last eight, with their front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane making them one of the most feared sides in Europe.

Riise admits that the Liverpool attack can inflict pain on any side in Europe, but believes Roma have a chance if they can escape Anfield tonight with some kind of a result.

The former Reds star, who also played for Roma, believes the return leg at the Stadio Olimpico favours Roma and as Barcelona found out in the competition, it could become an intimidating arena for any visiting side.

Riise told Italian outlet Tutto Mercato: “The return leg in Roma favours the Giallorossi, but they will need a lot of patience and a clean sheet tonight.

“The Liverpool front three can always hurt you, but if they get good a good result at Anfield, [Eusebio] Di Francesco’s team can make it.”

He added: “The south stand and the Olimpico will then act as an extra man in the return leg.”
