Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has backed the club attempting to sign Scott Arfield, feeling the midfielder is a superb player.

The Gers are chasing Arfield, who is out of contract with Premier League side Burnley in the summer, and have been in touch with the 29-year-old's representatives.

Burnley have offered Arfield fresh terms to stay at Turf Moor, but with a number of options he has been tipped to quit in search of a new challenge.

Ferguson has backed the idea of Rangers landing the former Falkirk man and thinks he has proven his mettle at the highest level.

The former Rangers midfielder told STV: "Scott Arfield is a player I rate very highly.

"He went down there with Burnley and he's had a fantastic time down there.

"He's played at the highest level in the Premier League and not looked out of place", he added.

And with Rangers also wanting Allan McGregor, Ferguson has backed the Gers targeting Scottish players who are aware of the standards associated with being at Ibrox.

"I think it's important that they've got that identity, guys that know what the club's all about", he added.

Rangers are looking to continue to strengthen over the summer transfer window as they bid to move on from what has been a disappointing campaign so far.
