Arsene Wenger has indicated that he was forced to announce his departure from Arsenal at the end of the season.

The Frenchman and Arsenal announced last week that Wenger will call an end to his 22-year stint with the Gunners at the end of the current campaign and bring an end to a successful time in the history of the club.

While Arsenal tried to maintain that it was a mutual decision, there were already suggestions that Wenger was given little option but to exit the club with grace in the summer.

The Frenchman said at the weekend that he doesn’t feel tired, indicating that he wanted to continue at Arsenal, but it seems the club hierarchy made the decision for him.

And Wenger stressed that timing of the announcement was not his call and more or less indicated that he was asked to leave Arsenal rather than it being a mutual decision.

When probed why he announced his departure now when he has a contract until 2019, the Frenchman said in a press conference: “The timing wasn’t really my decision.

“For the rest, I have spoken about it already.”

Arsenal made major changes over the last year behind the scenes to smooth Wenger’s exit with key football appointments and it seems the final decision was taken out of his hands.
