Marseille full-back Jordan Amavi has conceded that misses having Patrice Evra in the squad following his departure in November.

The veteran defender’s contract with Marseille was terminated in November last year after he had an altercation with a fan during a game and he joined West Ham on a free transfer in January.

Evra acted as a mentor to Amavi at Marseille and the former Aston Villa full-back admits that the competition from the ex-Manchester United man pushed him to play better.

The Marseille full-back admits that he misses Evra and believes his experience and leadership qualities were of huge significance during his short stint with the French giants.

He also added that Evra stressed the importance of being fit and advised him to continue to listen to Marseille fitness coach Paolo Rongoni.

“Competition means you have to outperform yourself”, Amavi told French daily L’Equipe.

“But yes, I miss him because he’s a good person, he has the soul of a leader and had the experience that was good for us.

“He told me to listen to Paolo Rongoni because he would take me to the next level.”

The former Manchester United man has made three appearances for West Ham since returning to England in the winter.
