Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes Luis Enrique’s record at Roma should stand as a stark warning to Arsenal if they are considering him to replace Arsene Wenger.

Enrique has been on a sabbatical since leaving Barcelona at the end of last season following a trophy laden three-year stint that saw him win the Spanish league title twice and the Champions League, amidst various other honours.

The Spaniard did not have a stellar coaching record before taking charge of Barcelona in 2014 and had particularly poor spell at Roma, where he lasted just one season, as the Giallorossi failed to qualify for Europe.

While his record at Barcelona has made him a coveted manager in European football, Nicol feels clubs such as Arsenal should study his time at Roma closely before making any decision.

The former Red indicated that Enrique was lucky to inherit a wonderful squad of players at Barcelona, which allowed him to play the kind of football he wanted them to play.

Nicol told ESPN FC when asked about Enrique potentially replacing Wenger at Arsenal: “Roma, they couldn't wait to get him out of the door. They mutually agreed between the two of them.

“He goes to Barcelona and he's got all the tools.

“Particularly a back four who could, at the time, not only pass their way out against anybody, but could actually defend.

“I don't think this guy is the man for Arsenal whatsoever.”

The Spaniard is also believed to be on Chelsea's shortlist as potential replacement for Antonio Conte.
