Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided a glowing reference to Mikel Arteta amidst speculation that Arsenal are considering him as a potential replacement for Arsene Wenger in the summer.

Wenger’s announcement he will leave Arsenal following the end of the current campaign has led to speculation over the names who could possibly replace the Frenchman at the Emirates.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique and Monaco’s Leonardo Jardim are some of the big names believed to be in the fray, but there are suggestions that Arsenal are also considering one of their former players to take charge from Wenger.

Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis is said to be in favour of roping in former Arsenal captain Arteta as their new manager, despite his lack of experience at the top level.

The Spaniard has been part of Guardiola’s backroom staff at Manchester City and the former Barcelona boss lavished praise on the young coach and his credentials.

He indicated Arteta has the tools to be successful at a top club such as Arsenal.

Asked about Arteta being linked with Arsenal, Guardiola said in a press conference: “I’m not the right guy to talk about that because my opinion of Mikel is overwhelming. He deserves the best.

“We are so comfortable working with him, he is one of the reasons for our success this season.

“There are many names for the next Arsenal manager.

"I don’t know what their plans are, but I know Mikel very well and he deserves all he wants.”

It remains to be seen whether the Arsenal fans would welcome an inexperienced appointment such as Arteta if the club go in that direction.
