Former Juventus defender Gianluca Luppi believes the signing of Matteo Darmian from Manchester United could be a gamble for the Italian champions as the defender has been struggling in England.

Darmian is expected to leave Manchester United in the summer after a season of struggles where he has rarely featured and has become a fringe player in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Juventus have long identified the defender as a possible target and they are expected to make a move to take the former Torino defender back to Turin at the end of the season.

Manchester United are willing to listen to offers for Darmian, but Luppi has cautioned Juventus about signing the full-back as he has been struggling to recapture his old form in England.

However, he admits he would be pleased to see Darmian return to Italy in the summer.

Luppi told TuttoJuve: “The Darmian I knew in Italy, is struggling in England.

“He would be gamble, but being an Italian it would be a pleasure to see him again in Serie A."

Darmian has made just 15 appearances in all competitions this season and has only made three Premier League starts.
