Jurgen Klopp thinks Celtic fans have been left astonished by Rangers managing to appoint Steven Gerrard as their new manager and it could be a good sign for the Gers.

Gerrard had been working at Klopp's Liverpool as Under-18s coach, but the German was prepared to smooth the way for the club legend to take his first senior managerial post.

The former Liverpool captain has signed a four-year contract with Rangers and will be looking to knock Celtic off the summit of Scottish football.

Klopp thinks Celtic fans cannot be happy about their fierce rivals appointing Gerrard, while he also feels Rangers are in a better moment than they were a few years ago.

"How I know it, Rangers are a big club in a little bit of a difficult moment still, but a much better moment than a few years ago", Klopp told Liverpool's official site.

"It could be a really good fit, it could be nice, coming closer to Celtic.

"I’m pretty sure Celtic supporters don’t think, ‘Thank God, Steven Gerrard’. They think, ‘Wow, Steven Gerrard’. That can always be a sign."

Klopp admits that Gerrard does have to learn about what is needed in management, but he stressed that the new Rangers boss already has lots of knowledge of the game.

"Stevie is one of the best midfielders ever. Now he wants to be a manager. He has the passion for football and the knowledge about football. All the rest is to learn; I’m sure he learned a lot in the last year.

"I’m really happy for him to have the opportunity", the Liverpool manager added.

Klopp has been tipped to help Gerrard out at Rangers by potentially sending fringe Liverpool players to the Ibrox club on loan.
