Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes Brendan Rodgers will flex his muscles to make sure Steven Gerrard does not get one over him as Rangers manager.

Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers manager has brought forward the tantalising prospect of him pitting his wits against his former Liverpool boss Rodgers north of the border.

The Northern Irishman has been immensely successful since taking charge of Celtic and is on the verge of winning his second consecutive domestic treble as Bhoys boss.

Rangers are hoping Gerrard will be able to go toe to toe with Rodgers and stop Celtic from winning ten league titles in a row, but Sutton is sure the former Reds boss will respond aggressively to the appointment at Ibrox.

He is certain that Rodgers will do everything in his power to not be humiliated by his former Liverpool captain.

Sutton said on BT Sport Score: “Brendan Rodgers is going to see this appointment at Rangers and he is going to flex his muscles and go again at Celtic.

“He would feel humiliated if Gerrard came up and beat him.”

Gerrard has signed a four-year deal with Rangers and is expected to be backed with significant funds over the upcoming transfer windows to build his squad.
