Manchester United legend Lou Macari has urged Jose Mourinho to get more out of the Red Devils squad next season to challenge for the Premier League title.

Mourinho’s side only need a point from their last two league games to confirm finishing second this season, but the title has looked out of their reach since December.

Manchester United are expected to spend big again in the summer transfer window to make sure they are contenders again next term, but Macari believes it is essential they look to have a settled squad next season.

He believes another heavy churn of players is not something Manchester United should want as it is important to have some consistency in terms of personnel.

And he also feels it is Mourinho’s job to get the most out of his squad of players next season and make them more consistent.

Asked if Mourinho was right in questioning the mentality of his players, Macari said on MUTV: “Because we are finishing so far behind Man City, he is entitled to say that.

“That’s his job now to bridge that gap by using his expertise, whichever players he thinks can do that and he also touched on that bringing player after player in and shipping player after player out – that doesn’t work.

“I know football fans get frustrated and annoyed and want to see xyz come to your club, but the turnover of players is ridiculous.

“You have got to try and get a settled team and get more out of them.

“I think our team this season have shown that on certain days they can turn up, as they did against City and at Wembley against Spurs.

“It’s more about consistency and the manager getting more out of them.”

Manchester United will finish the season with an away trip to West Ham, tonight, and a home game on Sunday against Watford.

They will play in the FA Cup final against Chelsea on 19th May.
