Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson says he would be shocked if the Gers won the race for Celtic linked midfielder John McGinn.

The Hibernian star has long been linked with a move to Celtic, being tipped as the natural successor to Bhoys skipper Scott Brown, and there is expected to be serious interest in him in the summer transfer window.

Incoming Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been linked with wanting McGinn at Ibrox, but Thompson has scoffed at the suggestion the Gers could win the race for the midfielder.

Despite playing for Gerrard being a draw, Thompson feels that there is just no way McGinn is Rangers bound and has dismissed the chances of the move happening.

"If John McGinn signs for Rangers I would be extraordinarly surprised", Thompson said on BBC Scotland Sportscene Extra.

"I would even do a forfeit if he signs for Rangers.

"So I would safely say that that's not going to happen."

Gerrard is expected to be backed to revamp the Rangers squad over the course of the summer transfer window as the Gers look to battle Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.
