Noel Whelan thinks that Bailey Peacock-Farrell has made a strong case for Leeds United not to buy another number 1 in the summer transfer window.

Leeds started the season with German custodian Felix Wiedwald in goal, before dropping him in favour of Andy Lonergan. Wiedwald then won his place back before being dropped again, with this time Peacock-Farrell stepping in.

The goalkeeper's performances have belied his tender 21 years and he has earned plaudits for his play between the sticks.

And as a result the jury is now out on whether Leeds should dip into the market to search for a new number 1 in the summer, or instead keep faith with the Darlington-born shot-stopper.

"He's got a great case for it [remaining as number 1] because he's got better since he's come in", Whelan admitted on BBC Radio Leeds.

"We've seen the improvements in an area of the field which has been so disappointing. Even at the start when we were having a great run we were never convinced about Wiedwald.

"He has come in, he has shown that his distribution is absolutely spot on and some of the saves that he has made this season have been tremendous", he added.

Leeds are expected to make a number of signings in the summer as they look to revamp a squad which could deliver only a 13th place finish in the Championship this season.

And Peacock-Farrell's performances may mean the Whites choose to save the money they would have spent on a goalkeeper and allocate it to other areas of the pitch.
