Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has warned that the Gers may have to pay up to 18 months up on the contracts of a number of players they want to offload this summer.

The Gers are expected to make big changes to their squad over the summer transfer window as they look to reshape the side to the liking of incoming manager Steven Gerrard.

Rangers have done substantial business in recent transfer windows, especially last summer when former boss Pedro Caixinha was backed to bring players to Ibrox.

Ferguson thinks that if Rangers are to offload a number of players then they may have to dig deep, with those concerned not likely to easily walk away from the lucrative contracts they penned.

He said on PLZ Soccer: "I know what players are like when they sign a contract.

"They aren't going to move unless they get 12 to 18 months paid up.

"Now that's going to cost a lot of money, certainly with the guys Caixinha brought in who are on good wages.

"Maybe some like Michael O'Halloran and Andy Halliday aren't in the top bracket, but they are still on decent money, so it's going to cost a lot to get rid of these guys.

"[Even] if clubs are interested in them it is the player's decision and they might not want to move."

Rangers have not yet indicated how much money will be put at Gerrard's disposal to make signings, but the Gers have already moved to make additions with goalkeeper Allan McGregor and midfielder Scott Arfield tipped to arrive.
