Belgium international Dries Mertens has lavished praise on the desire Romelu Lukaku has shown to work on the weak areas of his game.

Lukaku has enjoyed a fruitful first season at Manchester United, scoring 27 goals in all competitions for the club and could end the campaign by winning the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Belgian has always been a prolific goalscorer in England, with spells at Chelsea, Everton and West Brom, before joining Manchester United last summer and he has continued to improve.

His overall game has improved, but many still question his ability to control the ball with his first touch; however Mertens has revealed the amount of work the striker has been putting in to weed that weakness out his game.

The Napoli winger admits that he has immense respect for the hard work Lukaku continues to put in to elevate his game despite being a prolific goalscorer in England.

Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Mertens said: “He has improved a lot.

“People sometimes laugh at this first touch, but he is the kind of person who takes 20 balls after each training session and practices with them.

“I have lot of respect for the perseverance he has shown in that area.”

It is unclear whether Lukaku has recovered from his ankle injury, but he has travelled with the Manchester United squad to London for the FA Cup final.
