Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck has insisted that Everton loanee Henry Onyekuru’s attitude will play a key role in whether the club will extend his loan stay this summer.

The Belgian giants signed the forward on loan from Everton last summer following his transfer from Eupen and he had an impressive first half of the campaign with the club.

However, Onyekuru has not played since sustaining a serious knee injury and was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer, leading to suggestions that the player has been fuming at Anderlecht’s role.

The forward has recuperated from the knee injury, but the club have not taken a chance by trying to rush him in and Vanhaezebrouck feels Onyekuru has no reason to complain as he is still not ready to play regular football.

He was quoted as saying by Het Nieuwsblad: “He or his entourage should not blame us for his non-selection in the World Cup.

“Henry should check how many international games he missed because of his knee injury.

“He is not ready to play.”

Anderlecht have an agreement to extend his loan stay for one more season, but the coach stressed that a decision has not been taken on whether he will continue at the club.

Asked if Anderlecht will extend the player’s loan deal, Vanhaezebrouck said: “That depends on other options and also on the attitude of the player.”
